The Fed Cup, a highly-anticipated women’s international tennis event, is coming to Worcester, Mass., February 4-5, at the DCU Center. The U.S. will take on Belarus with matches featuring tennis champion Serena Williams and world No. 3 Victoria Azarenka, of Belarus.
 
The USTA is offering a special student discount rate of just $25 (for both days) to each student who presents their school identification upon purchase. Tickets will be available for purchase at the DCU Box Office beginning Monday, January 16.   Students will receive specialty noise-makers at the match to help cheer-on the U.S. Fed Cup team, and the USTA is encouraging students to come out and show their support.
 
Fed Cup Facts:
·         Fed Cup by BNP Paribas is the world’s largest annual international women’s team competition with 90 countries competing in 2011
·         The United States leads all nations with 17 Fed Cup titles, the last coming in 2000
·         This will be the first home tie for the U.S. since the 2010 Fed Cup Final in San Diego, where the team lost to Italy
·         In 2011, the U.S. played away ties in Belgium and Germany
·         The U.S. is 35-4 all-time in Fed Cup ties played at home
·         The 2012 Fed Cup match in Worcester will begin with two singles matches on Saturday, February 4, starting at 12:30 p.m. Sunday’s schedule features two singles matches followed by one doubles match on Sunday, February 5, starting at 11:30 a.m.

- Clark University to host state contest of National History Day, April 9
After competing in five regional districts, 283 students, grade levels 6 to 12, will compete in the state finals of Massachusetts History Day at Clark University on Saturday, April 9.  The contest will take place between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. in the Higgins University Center, Jonas Clark Hall, and the Jefferson Academic Center.  An awards ceremony will take place at 3:15 p.m.,  in the Daniels Theatre of Atwood Hall.

  • Reality plays a role: Clark University to host Poverty Simulation
    March 3oth at Noon 

    This spring at Clark University, volunteers will play roles such as Schoolteacher, Employer, Police Officer and Pawnbroker, but not with the theater department. Instead, they will be inhabiting “Realville,” a Poverty Simulation exercise organized by Clark sociology Professor Shelly Tenenbaum. The simulation will begin at noon on Wednesday, March 30, in Dana Commons, at Maywood and Florence Streets.

    Dustin Speakman, director of Community Services of the Ohio Association of Second Harvest Foodbanks and an originator of the Community Action Poverty Simulation, will be at Clark to facilitate the event, which will involve students taking the “Class, Status and Power” course taught by Professor Robert Ross and Professor Melissa Butler’s “Introduction to Sociology.” Read the rest of this entry »

    On Wednesday, March 30, IDCE will host keynote speaker, Amy Goodman, award-winning investigative journalist, author, syndicated columnist, and host of the “Democracy Now!” TV/radio program. She is the author of four New York Times bestsellers, including “Breaking the Sound Barrier.” Goodman’s address will begin at 4 p.m., in Tilton Hall at the Higgins University Center. 

    On Thursday, March 31, IDCE will present a two-part symposium titled “Building Bridges, Breaking Barriers,” starting at 9 a.m. in the Grace and Lurie Rooms at the Higgins University Center. Panel topics will include:

  • Global Health and Social Justice: Who Sets the Agenda?
  • Meeting Complex Challenges: The Evolution of Environmental Science & Policy
  • Neighborhoods and Regions of Promise: Pathways to Sustainable Development, and
  • GIS Applications to Environmental Change, Conservation and REDD.

  • Higgins School sponsors ‘Unauthorized Puritans’
    Wednesday February 16 at 5:30 p.m. in Dana Commons
    The manuscript and print archive of Puritan New England challenges our notions of early modern authorship, says Meredith Neuman. Sermon literature is produced by the community – with no simple progression from oral performance to printed text and with no clear hierarchy between the efforts of the minister and the experience of the congregation. This phenomenon creates a kind of literary ecosystem in which oral, aural, manuscript, and print texts each continuously affect the meaning of the other.

    Researching original manuscripts by Martin Heidegger, Julia Ireland discovered that an abbreviation thought to refer to “Natural Science” actually refers to “National Socialism.” A scholar whose entire intellectual life has been caught up in the study and appreciation of Heidegger, Ireland uses this opportunity to emphasize the importance of language, close reading, and careful analysis, as well as to rethink the importance of Heidegger’s work.
