Five ways to make friends with Worcester’s frigid weather
By Gwen Walsh
Growing up, my mother had no sympathy for what she called “weather wimps.” Once she sent me and my brother off to walk to school during a blizzard, because the idea of a snow day hadn’t even crossed her mind. So instead of cowering inside when the season turns, I have learned to “make friends with winter” (as my mom always said), and it has made all the difference. So here are some suggestions to make the rest of your Worcester winter more bearable. Enjoyable even.
1)Get a down-jacket – It may be a bit of an investment, and may not be the most chic fashion statement, but a good down jacket goes a long way on a cold walk to class.
2)Dress in layers – So when you enter your dorm and classroom, which is undoubtedly over-heated enough to resemble the equator, you can strip down to a t-shirt without breaking a sweat.
3)Carry pocket-pack tissues – invaluable during a sniffle-filled three hour seminar.
4)Window sealing kit – if you live off-campus in a drafty three-decker, you know what it’s like to watch your hard-earned wages float out the ill-fitting window casements.
5)Body heat – what is more efficient than snuggling up with your roommate, friend, or significant other?
